Technology is taking over human jobs.

I learned that fortune 500 companies are now using artificial intelligence tools to interview people. Is this practice fair? They are using facial analysis among other methods to weed out people. Is this ethical? In my opinion it is taking away jobs from people around the world. Especially now more than ever that people need employment. It is scary to imagine what the future holds for our society if technology takes fully over the jobs.

  1. Did this article (https://www.wsj.com/articles/artificial-intelligence-the-robots-are-now-hiring-moving-upstream-1537435820) from A3 Tailored Cover Letter and Resume spark this blog post of yours?

Using artificial intelligence in facial analysis is actually not new. Use of other technology in the job candidate vetting process has been around even longer. I will elaborate in next class's presentation that I will give to the class :-)

  2. That truly is a scary thought. I understand many may intend to make things more efficient, or to conserve cost, but for specific jobs will no doubt depend on that natural human touch. Thinking of that always makes me wonder why we'll set our standards so high, that natural humans can't even attain them.

  3. I think of this a lot. I work in a big factory and sometimes I think of the scene from Willy Wonka where he loses his factory job to a robot. An interesting thing to think about.

  4. Yes and no. I maintain that we will always adapt somehow and that we will always create DIFFERENT jobs while the current jobs "disappear". Energy transforms, but never disappears which is also the law of conservation of energy. I am usually a realist and sometimes closer to a cynic, but that could just be a really positive and optimistic way of looking at things.
It's going to sound a little messed up, but growing up, my mom never let us put the cart in its stall at the grocery. She said that was invented to eliminate jobs and to have us work for free. We also STILL stay away from self-checkout as much as we can. I try to use checks, envelopes and stamps to this day in order to preserve jobs. Either way, we need to keep up with the times and do our best to adapt.

  5. I think the hiring and interview processes are unfair currently because of all the virtual filters. Even if you walk into a store to talk to the manager, they don't interact with you at all and direct you instantly to use the online process, where your digital application is then buried among tons of others. However, I don't mind the advancement of technology in terms of work performance because that is natural evolution and still requires skilled humans to operate anyways.

  6. I've thought about this from time to time. Companies always want to make more money and the way to do that is by increasing the efficiency of their production, through automation and AI.

  7. I completely agree, but we all know it's coming. Future jobs will be base more on working smarter not harder.

  8. I feel like that would defeat the purpose of an interview. It would make sense if it was for covid, but I highly doubt an automated interview would be as effective as a face to face interview.

  9. I do believe it is unethical that machines are taking away from careers by being the sole analyzing factor to interviews. I feel there is always going to be a certain level of distrust involving AI contrasting actual human interaction.

  10. I had seen a concept store that I think either Amazon or Tesla was working on that has no humans in the store and that everything is done through technology to scan all the items and whatnot and I thought that was kind of scary.
